The school

Queen Mary's Grammar School is on Sutton Road, Walsall WS1 2PG. Its admission policy says only boys are admitted to Years 7 to 11, and both boys and girls may join in Year 12. The Mercian Trust is the admission authority. The published admission number for Year 7 in September 2027 is 180.

It is one of five schools in the Shropshire, Wolverhampton and Walsall group of the West Midlands Grammar Schools partnership, which shares one entrance test with the Birmingham and Warwickshire grammar schools.

How admission works

The school hasn't yet published its policy for September 2028 entry, so this summary uses its September 2027 policy. Policies can change each year, so check the current one before you name the school as a preference.

Your child sits the West Midlands 11+ test and must reach the school's minimum qualifying score. The school's governors set that score after the results are in. For September 2027 entry, they confirm it in November 2026. The school's page gives a minimum qualifying score of 200 for 2024 and 2025 entry, and an approximate 200 for 2026 entry. Past scores don't tell you what will be needed in a future year.

If more boys qualify than there are places, the 2027 policy offers places in this order, by test score within each group:

  1. Looked after and previously looked after children.
  2. Children eligible for the Pupil Premium at the time of the test, up to 30% of places (54 places). If more apply than that, children at a state-funded primary school in Walsall come first. The policy lists these schools.
  3. All other children, by test score.

There is no catchment area and no priority for siblings. If two children have the same score, the policy uses their results in the separate parts of the test, then random allocation.

These scores are on the test's own scale. NextJen's mock exam scores are our own estimate on a different scale, so they can't be compared with these figures and don't predict a result.

Past scores don't tell you what will be needed in a future year. Each year's figures depend on how many children apply, how they score and where they live. They show what happened for September 2026 entry, not your child's chances.

These scores are on the test's own scale. NextJen's mock exam scores are our own estimate on a different scale, so they can't be compared with these figures and don't predict a result.

The lowest score offered is not a pass mark. Reaching the qualifying score means a child can be considered; places are then given in the order each school's admission policy sets out.

Registering for the test

For September 2027 entry, families registered online through the West Midlands Grammar Schools website between 5 May and 4pm on 26 June 2026. Your child is given a test centre near your home postcode. The school's page asked for a colour head-and-shoulders photo of your child when registering.

To be considered for a Pupil Premium place, you complete a form with your child's primary school. Check the current deadline on the school's page: its 2027 policy says the form must arrive before the day of the test.

The school's policy also has a late registration route: a child registered after the deadline (and before 1 February 2027 for 2027 entry) is tested, but is considered for the waiting list only, unless the circumstances are exceptional.

Test day and results

For September 2027 entry, the school gave the test date as Saturday 12 September 2026, with results sent no later than 16 October 2026. You then apply for a school place to your home council by 31 October.

Open evening

The school's open evening for September 2027 entry was on Thursday 4 June 2026. Dates for September 2028 entry haven't been published yet. Check the school's September 2027 entry page for updates.
