The school
Lawrence Sheriff School is on Clifton Road, Rugby CV21 3AG. Its admission policy describes it as a boys' grammar school with academy status and a co-educational sixth form. For September 2027 entry, the published admission number for Year 7 is 150.
It is one of six schools in the Warwickshire group of the West Midlands Grammar Schools partnership, which shares one entrance test with the Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton and Shropshire grammar schools.
How admission works
The school hasn't yet published its policy for September 2028 entry, so this summary uses its September 2027 policy. Policies can change each year, so check the current one before you name the school as a preference.
Your child sits the West Midlands 11+ test. After the results, the headteacher sets the "automatic qualifying score", after consulting the area's committee, along with a lower minimum standard for the waiting list. No score is published in advance.
The policy uses two catchment areas: the Eastern Area of Warwickshire (Rugby and the parishes listed in the policy) and a priority circle of 10.004 miles from Rugby Water Tower. If more boys apply than there are places, the 2027 policy offers places in this order:
- Looked after and previously looked after children.
- Up to 30 places for children eligible for the Pupil Premium when they registered for the test, living in either catchment area.
- Up to 5 places for children eligible for the Service Premium (armed forces families).
- Children of staff who have worked at the school for two years or more.
- Children living in the Eastern Area of Warwickshire.
- Children living in the priority circle.
- Any unused Pupil Premium places, then any unused Service Premium places, for children outside the catchment areas.
- Children living outside the catchment areas.
- Children at the minimum standard, for the waiting list.
Most groups need the automatic qualifying score. The policy says children in the first three groups qualify if they reach the automatic qualifying score, come within 20 marks below it, or reach the minimum standard, whichever is lower. The policy says siblings get no special priority.
Past scores
Past scores, September 2026 entry. Figures checked against the source on 4 October 2026.
| What it shows | Score for September 2026 entry |
|---|---|
| Automatic qualifying score | 213 |
| Minimum score for waiting list | 210 |
Past scores don't tell you what will be needed in a future year. Each year's figures depend on how many children apply, how they score and where they live. They show what happened for September 2026 entry, not your child's chances.
These scores are on the test's own scale. NextJen's mock exam scores are our own estimate on a different scale, so they can't be compared with these figures and don't predict a result.
Registering for the test
The Warwickshire schools' 2027 admission policies say the way you register depends on where you live, not on which schools you want. If you're unsure, check with the school you'd most like your child to attend before the registration deadline.
The school's 2027 policy says:
- If you live in Warwickshire, register with Warwickshire County Council through its Parent Portal.
- If you live in Birmingham, register with the Birmingham grammar schools, and choose to share the result with Warwickshire.
- If you live in Shropshire, Wolverhampton or Walsall, register with those grammar schools.
- If you live somewhere else, register in the area where you would most like your child to go to school. For example, a family in Northamptonshire who wants a Warwickshire school registers with Warwickshire.
For September 2027 entry, Warwickshire's registration opened on 7 May 2026 and closed at 4pm on 30 June 2026 (the time given in the school's policy; check the council's page for the current year).
Proof of address. Warwickshire County Council asks for proof of address in early December of Year 6. The school's 2027 policy asks for it by 11.59pm on 31 December.
Test day and results
For September 2027 entry, the school's policy gives the main test sessions as Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September 2026. It describes two papers of about 60 minutes each, including around 15 minutes of practice. Results were due by Friday 16 October 2026. You then apply for a school place to your home council by 31 October.
