Mock exams

Ten full mock exams, timed section by section

Sit a full mock in the two-paper format of the Birmingham and West Midlands 11+, then see which skills cost marks. Mock exams are booked and paid for separately from your plan.

The format

How a mock runs

Each mock follows the structure set out in the published test information.

  • Two papers

Each mock has two papers of 64 questions.

  • Four sections

English, verbal reasoning, nonverbal and spatial reasoning, and maths. Every section is timed on its own.

  • A break between papers

There is a 10 minute break between the two papers.

  • No going back

Once a section is finished, you cannot go back to it.

Your child's score

What the score means

A score is a snapshot of where your child is now.

Each area is scored from 70 to 141. The overall score counts English and verbal reasoning for half, and nonverbal and maths for a quarter each. Until 30 pupils have sat a mock, scores are estimates. After that, your child is placed against other NextJen pupils. A mock score is a measure of practice so far and is not a forecast of the result on the day.

Example mock exam result. Overall score 112, an estimate. Area scores: English 109, Verbal reasoning 116, Maths 114, Nonverbal and spatial 108.

Nonverbal questions, drawn in 3D

Nonverbal and spatial questions ask you to picture shapes folding and turning. Fold the net, then turn the cube to see which faces end up opposite each other.

A cross-shaped net of six squares. The middle row, from left to right, has a plus, a circle, a star and a diamond. Above the circle is a triangle, and below it a square. Folded into a cube, faces two apart in a line end up opposite each other: the circle is opposite the diamond, the plus is opposite the star, and the triangle is opposite the square.

Questions parents ask

All questions and answers
Are the mock questions the real test questions?

No. Nobody outside GL Assessment sees the real papers. Mock questions are written from scratch, checked by code where possible and solved again by separate automated reviewers that can't see the answer before going live.

Do mock questions appear in everyday practice?

No. The questions held back for the mocks never appear in practice, so a mock is always a fresh set.

How do we book a mock?

Mocks run as weekend sessions that you book and pay for separately. Families with a NextJen plan pay the lower member price.
