The school
King Edward VI School is on Chapel Lane, Stratford-upon-Avon CV37 6BE. Its admission policy describes it as a grammar school for boys with a co-educational sixth form. The governing body of the academy trust sets its admissions. For September 2027 entry, the published admission number for Year 7 is 87.
It is one of six schools in the Warwickshire group of the West Midlands Grammar Schools partnership. It is a different school from the six King Edward VI grammar schools in Birmingham, though all of them use the same entrance test.
How admission works
The school hasn't yet published its policy for September 2028 entry, so this summary uses its September 2027 policy, determined on 11 December 2025. Policies can change each year, so check the current one before you name the school as a preference.
Your child sits the West Midlands 11+ test. After the results, a committee sets the school's "automatic qualifying score" and a lower minimum standard for the waiting list. No score is published in advance.
Priority depends on distance from the Fountain in Rother Street, Stratford-upon-Avon: an inner circle of 13 miles and an outer circle of 16.936 miles. If more boys apply than there are places, the 2027 policy offers places in this order:
- Children with an Education, Health and Care Plan naming the school, if they reach the minimum standard.
- Looked after and previously looked after children who reach the qualifying score or come within 20 marks of it.
- Children eligible for free school meals living inside the outer circle who reach the qualifying score or come within 20 marks of it, up to 13 places.
- Up to 70 places for children living inside the inner circle who reach the qualifying score.
- Children living inside the outer circle who reach the qualifying score.
- Children living outside the outer circle who reach the qualifying score.
- Children below the qualifying score but at or above the minimum standard, for the waiting list.
Within each group, the highest score comes first, then distance. There is no priority for siblings.
Past scores
Past scores, September 2026 entry. Figures checked against the source on 4 October 2026.
| What it shows | Score for September 2026 entry |
|---|---|
| Automatic qualifying score | 239 |
| Minimum score for waiting list | 230 |
Past scores don't tell you what will be needed in a future year. Each year's figures depend on how many children apply, how they score and where they live. They show what happened for September 2026 entry, not your child's chances.
These scores are on the test's own scale. NextJen's mock exam scores are our own estimate on a different scale, so they can't be compared with these figures and don't predict a result.
Registering for the test
The Warwickshire schools' 2027 admission policies say the way you register depends on where you live, not on which schools you want. If you're unsure, check with the school you'd most like your child to attend before the registration deadline.
The school's 2027 policy says:
- If you live in Warwickshire, register with Warwickshire County Council through its Parent Portal.
- If you live in Birmingham, register with the Birmingham grammar schools on the West Midlands Grammar Schools website, and choose to share the result with Warwickshire.
- If you live somewhere else, register in the area where you would most like your child to go to school.
For September 2027 entry, Warwickshire's registration opened on 7 May 2026 and closed on 30 June 2026. Your child doesn't have to live in Warwickshire to sit the test.
Proof of address. Warwickshire County Council asks for proof of address in early December of Year 6. The school's 2027 policy asks for two documents within fifteen working days of the council's letter. Without them, your application can be treated as late.
Test day and results
For September 2027 entry, Warwickshire County Council held the test on 12 and 13 September 2026, and results were available on its Parent Portal from 16 October 2026. You then apply for a school place to your home council by 31 October.
Open events
The school offers Year 6 tours on request. For families of children now in Year 5, it lists an open morning on Saturday 26 June 2027, 9am to 12 noon.
