How it works

A week on NextJen

Short sessions, a lesson whenever a skill needs one, and a clear view for you. Here is what a family sees.

  1. Practice

Your child works through short sets of questions, weakest skill first. Three right in a row and the questions step up. Two wrong and they see a worked answer, then an easier question.

Example practice question: a level 3 maths question on fractions of amounts, with answer C, 9 stickers, chosen and ready to check.
  2. Lesson

Every one of the 160 skills has a lesson of 3 to 6 minutes, with worked examples, common mistakes and three tries.

Example lesson: finding a fraction of an amount. The method is to divide by the bottom number, then multiply by the top. A worked example shows 3/8 of 24 is 9, then the child has three tries of their own.
  3. Mistake review

Questions your child got wrong come back later, so a mistake is something to fix and not something to forget.

Example mistake review. A maths question, what is 15% of 60, answered 6. The right answer is 9, with the worked steps and a button to try a similar question. Below it, one earlier mistake is marked fixed and one is still to try again.
  4. Parent view

You see every skill from secure to needs work, with a focus for the week and your child's own notes on how they worked each answer out.

Example parent view for a Year 5 child. Letter codes 84, Secure. Fractions of amounts 68, Developing. Cube nets 58, Developing. Hidden words 38, Needs work. Focus this week: hidden words and cube nets.
  5. Weekly email

On Sunday you get a short summary of the week: what moved, what needs work and what to try next.

Example Sunday email to a parent. Ava's week: 4 sessions, 86 questions and 2 lessons. Ratio moved up from 52 to 71. Hidden words, at 38, needs work, so next week's focus is hidden words, starting with its lesson.

If your child is in Year 3

Sessions last 10 minutes and end calmly, with no timer. Questions are short, in bigger text, and a read-aloud button can read them out using your device's own voice, on most tablets and computers. Your child fills a sticker book by finishing sessions, and nothing is lost for missing a day. You see each skill as Secure or Building, the next skill to work on and one 10-minute activity to do together. There are no scores or mock exams in Year 3. Read our guide to Year 3.

Child safety and privacy

Built to keep children's data to a minimum

Children practise inside the parent's account. We collect only what we need to run it.

  • No child login. Your child practises in child mode, and your PIN takes you back to the parent area.
  • We never ask for your child's email address or surname.
  • No tracking in the child area, and no public profiles.
  • Data is deleted automatically 12 months after a plan ends.
