Ashlawn School, Rugby: an 11+ guide for parents

An independent guide by NextJen, an online 11+ practice service. This is not an official page of the school, the council or West Midlands Grammar Schools. Always check the school's current admission policy.

Ashlawn School in Rugby is a mixed school that is partly selective. Most of its Year 7 places don't need a test, but up to 31 places are for children who reach the qualifying score in the shared West Midlands 11+ test, the same test used by the Birmingham grammar schools. Unusually, Ashlawn has already published its policy for September 2028 entry.

The school

Ashlawn School is on Ashlawn Road, Hillmorton, Rugby CV22 5ET. It is a co-educational academy for ages 11 to 18, part of the Transforming Lives Educational Trust, which sets its admissions. Warwickshire County Council describes it as "bi-lateral", running one selective class.

Its admission number for Year 7 is 256. Of these:

  • Up to 31 places are for children who reach the 11+ qualifying score.
  • 25 places are for children selected by a separate modern languages aptitude test (a listening test, not the 11+).
  • The rest are non-selective. Any unfilled selective places become non-selective.

It is one of six schools in the Warwickshire group of the West Midlands Grammar Schools partnership.

How admission works

This summary uses Ashlawn's policy for September 2028 entry, issued in September 2026. Its 2027 policy has the same numbers. Policies can change, so check the current one before you name the school as a preference.

For the 31 selective places, your child sits the West Midlands 11+ test. After the results, a committee (the Committee of Reference) sets the "automatic qualifying score". No score is published in advance.

If more children apply than there are places, the policy offers places in this order:

  1. Children with an Education, Health and Care Plan naming the school.
  2. Looked after and previously looked after children.
  3. Up to 31 selective places: up to 15 for children living in the Eastern Area of Warwickshire and up to 16 for children within 10.004 miles of Rugby Water Tower (Pupil Premium children first in each), then children from further away who reach the qualifying score.
  4. Up to 25 places through the languages aptitude test.
  5. Siblings, in the order the policy sets out.
  6. Children of trust staff, in the order the policy sets out.
  7. Everyone else.

Ties are settled by distance, then by lottery. The non-selective places follow the later steps, so a child can be offered a place at Ashlawn without sitting the 11+.

Past scores don't tell you what will be needed in a future year. Each year's figures depend on how many children apply, how they score and where they live. They show what happened for September 2026 entry, not your child's chances.

These scores are on the test's own scale. NextJen's mock exam scores are our own estimate on a different scale, so they can't be compared with these figures and don't predict a result.

Registering for the test

The Warwickshire schools' 2027 admission policies say the way you register depends on where you live, not on which schools you want. If you're unsure, check with the school you'd most like your child to attend before the registration deadline.

The policies say:

  • If you live in Warwickshire, register with Warwickshire County Council through its Parent Portal.
  • If you live in Birmingham, register with the Birmingham grammar schools, and choose to share the result with Warwickshire.
  • If you live somewhere else, register in the area where you would most like your child to go to school.

For September 2027 entry, Warwickshire's registration opened on 7 May 2026 and closed on 30 June 2026, and results were on the council's Parent Portal from 16 October 2026. Warwickshire County Council asks for proof of address in early December of Year 6.
