How a question works
Type it, check it, see the method
- 1
They type the answer
They type most answers, as in the exam, in a box with the £ sign or the unit already there and the rounding asked for underneath. Where typing doesn't suit the question, they choose from options.
- 2
A slip shows the worked steps
Using the question's own numbers. A right value in the wrong form gets a nudge instead, like "Right value: now simplify it", and another try.
- 3
Practice moves with them
Three right in a row brings harder questions. Two wrong in a row steps back to easier ones and shows the method again.
Try a GCSE question and see the marking for yourself.
Foundation or Higher
Not sure which tier? Their maths teacher will know which tier they're likely to sit. As a rough guide: Foundation if they're working towards grades 1 to 5, Higher if they're aiming for grade 6 or above. You can switch tiers at any time.

Every exam board, from one question bank
The content of GCSE Maths is set nationally by the Department for Education, so every exam board in England teaches and tests the same maths. Our questions cover that national content, so they suit whichever board your teenager's school uses. NextJen is independent and isn't linked to or approved by any exam board.

GCSE questions parents ask
What does an estimated grade mean?
It's our best guess at the grade your teenager's marks would get, using NextJen's own grade boundaries, set from the exam boards' recent published boundaries. Real boundaries change every year, and on screen only final answers are marked, so working that would earn method marks in the exam isn't counted. Treat it as a guide to progress, not a prediction of their real result.
Should my teenager do Foundation or Higher?
Not sure which tier? Their maths teacher will know which tier they're likely to sit. As a rough guide: Foundation if they're working towards grades 1 to 5, Higher if they're aiming for grade 6 or above. You can switch tiers at any time. Foundation covers grades 1 to 5 and Higher covers grades 4 to 9. Each GCSE Maths place is for one tier. If the teacher's advice changes later, you can switch tiers yourself from your child's page. Their progress is kept and the price doesn't change.
How do we link my teenager's phone, and what if they forget their PIN?
Open your teenager's progress page in your parent area and press Get a code under Student mode. On their phone, tablet or laptop they go to nextjentuition.co.uk/student, type the code (it works once, for 10 minutes) and choose their own PIN of 4 to 6 numbers. You can link up to 3 devices. If they forget their PIN, remove the device on the same page and link it again with a new code, and they choose a new PIN.
Can my teenager practise with 25% extra time?
Yes. Turn on 25% extra time on timed papers on your teenager's progress page. A 1 hour 30 minute paper then runs to 1 hour 52 minutes 30 seconds. You don't need to tell us why, and we don't ask. Their results show which papers were sat with extra time.
How many practice papers can I print?
4 printable downloads a month, with papers and mark schemes counted together, so one paper and its mark scheme makes two. The count starts again on the 1st of each month. Each download carries your family's own licence code and is for use at home only. Papers sat on screen don't count towards the 4.
Who sees the answers my teenager types?
Only your teenager. You see their marks, the topics they've practised, how long they've spent and an estimated grade, but not the answers they type or their PIN. They can download their own answers in student mode.
