How NextJen works

The same calm method, whichever course

  1. Every question teaches the method

A slip shows the worked steps, using the question's own numbers, so a mistake turns into something learnt.

Example GCSE Maths question on ratio, about grade 4: share £90 in the ratio 2 to 3 and give the larger share. The typed answer, £54, is marked correct, and the three worked steps are shown.
  2. Practice adapts

Three right in a row and the questions step up. Two wrong and practice eases off and explains.

Example practice question: a level 3 maths question on fractions of amounts, with answer C, 9 stickers, chosen and ready to check.
  3. You see what to work on next

A parent view in plain words: what's secure, what needs work, and where to spend the next session.

Example parent view for a Year 5 child. Letter codes 84, Secure. Fractions of amounts 68, Developing. Cube nets 58, Developing. Hidden words 38, Needs work. Focus this week: hidden words and cube nets.

Answer one the way your child would, then see the worked answer.

EnglishApostrophes for possessionLevel 3

Which sentence has the apostrophe in the right place?

Show the answer

The answer is B: The children's books were on the shelf..

  1. Ask who owns the books. The children do, so the apostrophe goes with the word children.
  2. Children is already a plural that does not end in s, so add 's after it: children's.
  3. Check the others. Childrens' adds an s that is not part of the plural, then puts the apostrophe after it. Book's is wrong too: books is a plural here, not a possessive.
Verbal reasoningLetter codesLevel 2

If CAT is written as DBU, how is DOG written in the same code?

Show the answer

The answer is D: EPH.

  1. Each letter moves one place forward in the alphabet. C to D, A to B, T to U.
  2. Do the same to DOG. D to E, O to P, G to H.
  3. The answer is EPH.
MathsTwo-step word problemsLevel 3

Jamal plants 8 rows of tulips with 6 tulips in each row. He gives 15 tulips to his neighbour. How many tulips does he have left?

Show the answer

The answer is B: 33.

  1. Find the total first. 8 rows of 6 tulips is 8 × 6 = 48.
  2. Then take away the ones he gave away. 48 − 15 = 33.
  3. Check by adding back. 33 + 15 = 48, which matches the total.
Nonverbal and spatialSequences of shapesLevel 2

Picture: Three arrows pointing up, right and down, then a box with a question mark.

Each arrow turns the same way and by the same amount as the one before it. Which arrow comes next, in the box with the question mark?

Show the answer

The answer is A: Pointing left.

  1. Compare the first two arrows. Up becomes right, so each arrow turns a quarter turn clockwise.
  2. Keep going the same way. Right becomes down, so down becomes left.
  3. The next arrow points left. Pointing up would start the pattern again, which it does not do.

    How a question gets made

Every question is written from scratch and checked before any child sees it

We never copy test papers. Each question goes through three steps before any child sees it.

    1. Written from scratch

Each question is written to match the style, format and topics of the test. None is copied from GL Assessment or from a school.

    2. Checked by code

Where an answer can be worked out by a program, we run it and make sure it matches.

    3. Solved again, blind

Separate automated reviewers solve every question again without seeing the answer. If they disagree, it goes back.
