The school

Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls is on Jockey Road, Sutton Coldfield B73 5PT. Its admission arrangements describe it as a selective grammar school with academy status, for girls aged 11 to 18. It is one of Birmingham's eight grammar schools that use the shared entrance test, but it is not one of the King Edward VI schools. Its admission number for Year 7 in September 2027 is 180.

How admission works

The school has not yet published its admission arrangements for September 2028 entry. Its arrangements for September 2027 entry are the latest ones. Policies can change from year to year, so check the current arrangements on the school's website before you name it as a preference.

Your child sits the Birmingham 11+ test and must reach the qualifying score to be considered. The school's 2027 arrangements give the qualifying score as 205, the same figure the King Edward VI Foundation published for all the Birmingham grammar schools. There is no residence requirement: places depend on the test result, wherever you live.

If more girls qualify than there are places, the 2027 arrangements offer places in this order, by test score within each group:

  1. Looked after and previously looked after children, including children looked after outside England.
  2. Children eligible for the Pupil Premium, up to 36 places.
  3. All other qualifying children.

A girl whose Education, Health and Care Plan names the school is admitted first, and the other places go down by the same number. Where two girls have the same result, the one who lives nearer gets the place, measured in a straight line from home to the school's main reception. There is no priority for siblings. The arrangements count a child as eligible for the Pupil Premium if she has been registered for free school meals at any point in the six years before the test, and the eligibility form must reach the school before the day of the test. Girls who qualify but aren't offered a place stay on a waiting list, in the same order, until the end of the first term of Year 7.

These scores are on the test's own scale. NextJen's mock exam scores are our own estimate on a different scale, so they can't be compared with these figures and don't predict a result.

Registering for the test

For September 2027 entry, the King Edward VI Foundation's timeline gave registration for the Birmingham grammar schools as 5 May to 4pm on 26 June 2026, through the West Midlands Grammar Schools website. It says it isn't possible to register after the deadline. Requests for reasonable adjustments closed earlier, at 4pm on 12 June 2026. Dates for September 2028 entry haven't been published yet.

Registering for the test is not the same as applying for a school place. You apply to your home council by 31 October of Year 6.

Pupil Premium. To be considered for Pupil Premium priority, the Foundation's Pupil Premium page says you upload an extra form, completed by your child's primary school, when you register. A child registered for the Pupil Premium after the test date isn't considered for those places.

Test day and results

For September 2027 entry, the test was on Saturday 12 September 2026, with morning and afternoon sessions. The Foundation says you can't choose where your child sits the test: the venue and session are emailed to you by the end of July. There are two papers, each about 60 minutes long, with a short break between them.

The Foundation asks children to bring their own stationery (two HB pencils, an eraser and a sharpener). They may bring a light snack for the break, but no nuts, chewing gum or fizzy drinks.

Results were due by 16 October 2026. A result is not the offer of a place. The Foundation advises waiting for the result before you apply to your council, by 31 October. Councils make offers on national offer day, which is 1 March 2027 (or the next working day) for September 2027 entry.

Open evening

The school no longer holds an open evening in September. Its Year 5 open evening is in the summer term. The school says details of the 2027 event, for families applying for September 2028 entry, will come later this school year. Check its open events page.
